Chandpur District

Chandpur District

Being adjacent to Meghna, Dakatia, Dhonagoda rivers, Chandpur district is a green district of Chittagong division in Bangladesh. In 1779, English surveyor Major James Ranal sketched former Bengal map where Chandpur civilization had been discovered. There are lots of controversy regarding the naming of Chandpur. During Baro Bhuiya rule, the Chandpur area was under ruling of Bikrompur Jomidar Chand Roy. He established a ruling center in this area at that time. According to historian J. M. Shen Gupta, Chandpur was named after Chand Roy. Others said that, Chandpur was named after Chand Fakir of Purindpur. Another group argues that Chandpur was named after Shah Ahmed Chand who established a river port in this area at some point of time of 15th century.
